Hello world!

After my last column in The Mercury, which you can read here, in which I confessed to being not social enough for social networking, and feeling like the quiet girl in the back of the Facebook classroom, Mercury Editor Nancy March suggested I write a blog. (We found out that we kind of sit together in the back of that classroom, pondering the meaning of cyberspace).  I agreed because I think that I am, actually, social enough for blogging. To be honest, I don’t think anyone actually reads most  blogs. Which makes it sort of a technologically advanced method of talking to yourself. So, you might think that’s the perfect reason not to write a blog (and by you I mean me, because I’m pretty darn well convinced that I’m the only person who is ever going to read this).  But no, after years of writing news stories about things like budgets and sewers and (my personal favorite) construction bids, I’ve basically gotten used to the idea that I’m writing stuff that may not have a massive readership.  So, you see, a blog is actually the perfect outlet for the quiet girl in the back of the classroom. She can speak without being heard! (On Facebook, you know people are listening).

Anyway I’m hoping to use this blog as a good excuse, at least in part, to try to get a better handle on my finances. That’s boring right? I mean the word finance makes me yawn. So we’re really starting from scratch here. But what the heck? No one’s listening, anyway. And I’m tired of the fact that when that stupid IRA statement comes in the mail I have no idea what it means! The page is coated with numbers. What do they mean? For my next blog post, I intend to find out. So there you have it–my blog. I’m getting a better handle on my finances, and no one is ever going to read about it. I’m kind of excited about this.

A delightful commentary! I’m also clueless about finances, so will look forward to hearing what you have to say. Perhaps there will be insights worth sharing on Facebook.

    Laura,
When you’re done with your finances, can you help me understand mine?
Since no one else will read this, we can discuss it all right here on line.

As soon as I get a handle on my finances, you’ll be the first to read about it. Or probably, since it’s a blog, you’ll forget to read about it. So, if something important comes up, I’ll take Nancy’s advice and share it on Facebook. Once I get up the courage to raise my hand, that is.

Where can I “like” this post? I especially like the idea of using Evan’s finances in order to practice.

Laura, those of us who are NOT part of The Mercury cognoscenti are reading too.

By the way, what are finances, and will they fit into my ’67 Chevy?

Congratulations on the launch! I’m looking forward to making your part of my daily read.
